Centre for Contemporary Arts, Intermedia Gallery, Glasgow

In this collaborative installation, we worked with the physical characteristics of the exhibition space to question real and imagined states. With emphasis on making, material qualities and play, this immersive environment infused recognisable terrains with a warped perspective – resulting in an absurd manifestation of imagined forms. Objects were distorted and the boundaries between interior and exterior became blurred. Ultimately, finding quite familiar ground – the mountain may be forever out of reach.

White Mountain was kindly supported by CCA Glasgow and Hope Scott Trust.

A year on from group exhibition ‘SO IT IS’, YAKA took over the Project Room as a testing ground for the elusive theme of ‘Black Hole’ in order to explore possibilities within the collective.

Questioning temporal paradoxes, the strong gravitational pull towards the unknown, the emotional void within us all, and ideas of a body so massive that light itself cannot escape; the aim of the investigation was to form a loose foundation for ‘White Mountain’ – an exhibition for the Intermedia Gallery, CCA Glasgow in December 2015.

A FLOATING ISLAND

Cardboard, video, sound

Thomas More coined the term Utopia, a distinct ‘no place’, that doesn’t exist and an idea that cannot exist in our corrupt world. The removal of the isolated crannog from its natural state and through its reinterpretation within the artificial gallery arena, we see the idea of utopia at best become a phantom itself. Its image becomes a mirage of an unattainable idea.

The conveyor will propose with conviviality, hot food and drinks to warm the bodies and take them on the road for a walk, discovering the neighborhood by night. Everyone will be allowed on the road, growing the procession; everybody walking together.
